We Speak America explores the cultural complexities of identity through
interviews with women and men of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Contrasting stories are interwoven in a dialogue that explores the challenges and
rewards of biculturalism and bilingualism.
Americans of Latino, European, African, Indigenous, Middle Eastern and Asian descent
offer a glimpse into the complex spectrum of experiences surrounding the process of
identity formation that occurs in multicultural environments. Through these interviews,
people share stories of personal and cultural identity, honor family histories and
present visions for a multicultural future that celebrates diversity.
A Ghanian immigrant explains how knowledge of her history confers a sense of pride
towards her cultural background. A Chinese American educator reveals her embarrassment
about her Chinese background and guides us through the journey to China that led her
to reclaim her identity. A Jewish consultant affirms the importance of raising her
children in an environment that reflects society at large. A community organizer turns
the notions of borders on its head by validating his natural connection to this
continent. An African American principal and a Korean American businessman validate
in very different ways the empowering effect of culturally specific schooling. An
Indian American dancer demonstrates how difficult it can be to find a comfortable
definition of self. A Mexican mother confronts her young son’s unexpected sense of
identity.
We Speak America is a testament to how multiculturalism both defines and
enriches America. It is an in-depth look at diversity and what it really means to be
American.
