Pavilion of Women

Set in 1930's China, in a state of turmoil, Pavilion of Women is the story of Madame Wu (Luo Yan), an aristocrat's wife, who yearns to expand her intellectual and spiritual horizons. After her 40th birthday, she arranges for a concubine to assume conjugal duties to her husband while she pursues her own intellectual studies. She hires Andre, an American missionary doctor (Willem Dafoe) to tutor her son, joins in their classes, and soon enters into a forbidden love with Andre. Based on the acclaimed novel by Nobel Prize winning author Pearl S. Buck.
